Neurodiverse affirming therapy and neurodiverse affirming nutrition counseling in Newtown, PA in Bucks County, PA.

At Beyond,  we understand that every individual is unique and deserving of support that respects and celebrates their uniqueness. Our therapy and nutrition services are tailored to meet the specific needs of neurodiverse individuals, providing a safe and affirming space for growth, healing, and self-discovery.

Our approach to therapy and nutrition is rooted in the understanding and appreciation of neurodiversity. We recognize that differences in brain function and behavior are natural variations of the human experience. Rather than viewing neurodiversity as a disorder to be fixed, we embrace it as an integral part of who you are. We celebrate the strengths and talents that come with neurodiversity while also providing support for the challenges that may arise.

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a concept that celebrates the variety of neurological differences in human beings and emphasizes that these differences should be recognized and respected as a natural part of human diversity. The term neurodiversity challenges traditional perspectives that often pathologize neurological variations. Neurodiversity can be used broadly to describe all variations in cognition and neurological functioning. Some common conditions often referenced as neurodivergent include Autism, ADHD, OCD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Neurodiversity also includes depression, anxiety, social anxiety, intellectual disabilities, Tourette’s syndrome and sensory processing disorders.

How are our therapy and nutrition services neurodiversity affirming?

At Beyond, we specialize in treating neurodivergence whether or not it is occurring with an eating disorder or body image concerns. Neurodivergence that often occurs along with disordered eating includes ADHD, OCD, Autism, and anxiety. Diet culture promotes restrictive eating habits, eating habits and unrealistic body ideals, which can be particularly challenging for neurodiverse individuals who may have sensory difficulties with food or food related routines. Furthermore, some traditional approaches to improving an individual’s relationship with food and their body, such as listening to hunger and fullness cues, are not accessible to neurodivergent individuals who don’t have the same interoception (ability to feel what’s happening inside or with their body). Our clinicians are able to work collaboratively with you to determine how therapy or nutrition counseling can be tailored to your needs and experiences.

Our HAES dietitians emphasize a non-diet approach to nutrition, which prioritizes attuned eating, joyful movement and self-care practices. We honor your individual needs and preferences. By fostering an attuned relationship with food, our dietitians support neurodiverse individuals in nourishing their bodies in the ways that feel sustainable for them. This might include allowing distractions at the table or not forcing foods with disagreeable textures or that are otherwise uncomfortable. As dietitians, it’s essential to create an inclusive nutrition space where neurodiverse individuals feel seen, heard and respected. This may involve adapting communication styles as needed, providing sensory-friend resources/environment, and offering alternative forms of support, such as visual aids and/or written instructions. We actively listen to the unique needs and preferences of our neurodiverse clients and co-create a supportive environment. We don’t believe in an all or nothing approach.
