Hi, I'm Rachael McLaughlin, LPC, PMH-C!
I’m a HAES-aligned, anti-diet therapist specializing in eating disorders, ARFID, body image concerns, and perinatal mental health, including postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, and the transition to parenthood.
I believe everyone deserves to take up space in their life, in their body, and in this world. A strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation of meaningful therapy, and I strive to create a warm, inclusive, nonjudgmental space where clients can show up authentically—messy parts and all.
My approach is client-centered, collaborative, and grounded in compassion, with room for honesty, humor, and real-life humanity. I do my best work with clients who appreciate a direct but supportive approach and want a therapist who can hold both the hard stuff and the healing.
Lets Get to Know Each Other!
I specialize in eating disorders, perinatal mental health, fertility-related emotional support, body image concerns, anxiety, depression, and trauma. As a HAES-aligned, anti-diet therapist, I will never suggest weight loss as a goal in therapy or reinforce the idea that your body is the problem.
I love working with young adults and adults who are ready to heal their relationship with food, their body, and themselves while breaking free from diet culture, shame, and rigid patterns that no longer serve them.
I also love supporting individuals navigating fertility challenges, pregnancy after infertility, and the emotional complexity of trying to grow your family, in addition to new moms and parents adjusting to the transition to parenthood. I work with clients navigating postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, identity shifts, and the emotional overwhelm that can come with caring for yourself while caring for someone else.
As someone whose own path to motherhood included fertility challenges, I understand how isolating, emotionally exhausting, and deeply complicated these experiences can feel. Likewise, becoming a mom during the height of COVID in 2020 gave me firsthand appreciation for how messy, overwhelming, and unexpectedly difficult the postpartum period can be. While your experience does not need to look like mine, lived experience has deepened the empathy and perspective I bring into this work.
We will work together to create a therapy experience that feels most helpful to you, honoring your autonomy throughout the process. My approach is trauma-informed, inclusive, client-centered, and grounded in compassion, while also making room for honesty, humor, and practical support.
I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including relational and strength-based therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed work, person-centered therapy, and solution-focused approaches when helpful.
I do my best work with clients who appreciate a therapist who is warm, direct, collaborative, and deeply invested in their healing.
Here's my experience & approach-
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I am also licensed to offer virtual therapy in Delaware. I received both my Bachelors Degree in Psychology and my Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Heath Counseling from Rider University. I have advanced training in perinatal mental health through the Postpartum Support International (PSI) . I have over 10 years of experience treating eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image concerns with professional experience in both higher level of care (HLOC) eating disorder treatment as well as outpatient care. While in graduate school, I worked as a Mental Health Technician at a detox and rehab for substance use where I had the privilege of working with folks in the earliest stages of their recovery. As a graduate student at Rider, I conducted research related to body image and eating disorders, which allowed me to see a different aspect of the field.
Eating Disorder Treatment and Eating Disorder Therapy
I believe that everyone deserves and is able to achieve peace within themselves, with their bodies, and with their relationship with food. This means no more dieting. No more hatred towards your body. And no more "good and bad" foods. I offer therapy for clients struggling with their relationship with food, body, and disordered eating in addition to therapy for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Orthorexia. I work from a Health at Every Size (HAES ®) aligned approach. In therapy, we will explore your relationship with food and where and when your food beliefs and feelings began. This will often include dismantling societal norms and norms within your own childhood and life. Dismantling these beliefs and working to decrease shame, if it exists, can be powerful in your healing.
Body Image Therapy
We live in a world where it is often challenging to be in our bodies and taking up space in the world in which we live. Therapy for body image can help you reconnect to your body in safe, non-judgemental enviornment. Through an anti-diet, Health At Every Size lens, we will work together to understand the root of body image concerns and work towards reducing negative body image and shift towards body respect and tolerance. While working from a weight-neutral stance, we can hold space for the various parts and feelings that exist related to body image.
Perinatal Mental Health Therapy
After becoming a mom in 2020 and experiencing my own postpartum mood issues, I recognized the need for more specialized support for new (and not new!) parents. In addition to lived experience, I have advanced training from the Postpartum Support International (PSI) and hold a PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certified). I utilize a relational and person-centered approach in addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Solution Focused Therapy to help new parents through the transition to parenthood. We will talk through the challenges of new parenthood and prioritizing your needs and well-being. By working together, we can develop coping strategies to navigate mood issues that often occur postpartum and identify new ways to obtain support both in and outside of therapy.
Therapy for Depression, Anxiety, and Mood Concerns
Life can be incredibly challenging, and I am honored to create a safe place to process emotions that feel overwhelming or unmanageable. Clients often start therapy because they do not feel like themselves, and we will work together to help you get back to a more fulfilling life. We will work together to increase awareness and build up coping strategies to help manage low mood, anxiety, panic attacks, and obsessive thoughts.
Eating Disorder Level of Care Assessment and Consultation
Many people who are struggling with disordered eating or have been diagnosed with an eating disorder are often unsure what their next best steps are for their care and recovery. I provide unbiased, comprehensive consultations and assessments to offer support and direction on someone's next best step. Consultations are two hours in length, allowing clients the time and space for individualized recommendations to be made.
Psychoeducation will be provided to help clients and their supports understand eating disorder treatment, various levels of care and treatment options that exist, and what treatment facilities or local clinicians offer services that best suit their unique needs.
While many clients schedule these for themselves or a loved ones, clients can also be referred for by their current therapist, medical doctor, dietitian, or any other member of the client’s support system. I am happy to collaborate with your current treatment team or treatment centers you may already have a relationship with prior to the consult.
When I'm out of the office...
In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family, especially enjoying any local / town events! You can often find me working on DIY projects around the house and watching anything and everything that Joanna Gaines is involved in! I am also a Bravoholic who enjoys all the couch snuggles with her two cats. I occasionally hop on my Peloton bike, particularly to hang with my favorite instructors, Cody Rigsby, and, my HAES-aligned fav, Camila! I am part of a monthly book club that keeps me reading (and socializing) with my neighbors!
